What is Romanticism in English literature?

Romanticism or the Romantic Revival has nothing to do with love. Rather, it is related to emotion, freedom and imagination. It was an artistic and literary moment that spread in the end of the 18th century. It emerged in Europe between 1789-1830.

The romantic era was highly influenced by the French Revolution. It emerged in opposition to two literary movements: Neo-Classicism and Augustan Literature which were characterized by reason, intellect and rationality.

Romanticism bought feelings and depth to the English literature. Poets were able to touch people's inner feelings through their poetry.

There are many famous Romantic poets; William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Burns to name a few. William Wordsworth was the most prominent Romantic Poet. He said that poetry was an overflow of powerful feelings which a poet collects when he is at rest. He also defined 'a poet' with deep words; He said a poet is a man that speaks to another man. It means that a romantic poet is so imaginative and emotional that when another person reads his poems, he is deeply connected to the poet's heart and imaginations.  He further adds that a poet collects moments of life and stores them in a form of a poem that can relived indefinitely.
